Former President of South Africa and uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party leader, Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, will celebrate his 83rd birthday this Saturday, April 13, 2025. MK Party members across the country are gearing up to host events in various provinces to honor the life and political legacy of the man they regard as a liberation icon and defender of radical economic transformation.
Born in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal in 1942, Zuma's political journey began in his youth when he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and its armed wing, uMkhonto weSizwe, in the early 1960s. He was imprisoned for 10 years on Robben Island alongside other freedom fighters, including Nelson Mandela, for his role in the anti-apartheid struggle. After his release, Zuma went into exile and played a key role in intelligence operations for the ANC.
Zuma served as Deputy President of South Africa from 1999 to 2005 and later became the President of the ANC in 2007. He was elected as President of South Africa in 2009 and served two terms until his resignation in 2018. His presidency was marked by controversial yet impactful policies focused on economic empowerment for the previously disadvantaged. Some of his notable policies included the expansion of social grants, free higher education for poor and working-class students, and the strengthening of BRICS partnerships.
Despite facing criticism and legal challenges over corruption allegations, Zuma remains a popular figure among his supporters, who view him as a champion of black economic liberation and traditional African values.
MK Party spokespersons have confirmed that the birthday celebrations will include cultural performances, political dialogues, and community outreach programs. The central event is expected to take place in KwaZulu-Natal, where Zuma still commands strong grassroots support.
As he turns 83, Zuma continues to play a key role in South African politics through the MK Party, which has recently gained momentum ahead of the upcoming national elections.
